Traders and shoppers in Ibadan, Oyo State are counting heavy losses after a fire outbreak gutted part of the popular Sango Shopping Complex late last week.

The inferno, which erupted unexpectedly at one of the busiest commercial hubs in Ibadan North, quickly spread through sections of the complex, engulfing goods and property worth millions of naira before fire crews could fully contain it.

No fatalities were reported, but several shop owners told journalists they lost merchandise and stock that represented years of investment.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed its response to the blaze and said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire, even as officials urged traders to adopt better fire safety measures.

Many affected traders are now demanding government support and improved safety infrastructure in markets across the city to prevent future losses.
