Ibrahim Abdulkarim, a political associate of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary ahead of the 2027 election. Speaking on Trust TV on Friday, April 16, 2026, Abdulkarim argued that Atiku, who will turn 80 next year, should be honoured with a dignified exit rather than another contest he is unlikely to win. He suggested a soft landing would preserve Atiku’s legacy and allow his name to be remembered positively by future generations.

Abdulkarim further urged the ADC to rally behind a joint ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, citing the strength of the Obidient and Kwankwassiyya grassroots movements. He claimed those around Atiku are not giving him the advice he needs and that an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance could mobilise young voters for the next general election.

The appeal highlights internal ADC dynamics as parties position for 2027, with age and succession becoming key talking points. It also signals a push for a southern-led coalition, with Abdulkarim stating "this is the time of the South."

What does this mean for ADC supporters and Nigerians watching the 2027 race? Will Atiku heed the call to step aside, or will he contest despite the pressure? How likely is an Obi–Kwankwaso joint ticket to materialise, and what impact could it have on voter mobilisation across regional lines?
