Ihedioha remains in ADC while Obi, Kwankwaso join NDC for 2027 bid
Former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha said on Thursday he will stay with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) even as Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have moved to the newly formed Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). Ihedioha praised Obi’s right to choose his path and wished him well, stressing that his own decision follows weeks of reflection after Obi’s May 3 announcement.
Ihedioha explained that the ADC coalition, built over the past year through sacrifice and strategic alignment, aims to deliver accountable, inclusive and prosperous governance for Nigeria. He said the party’s vision remains unchanged and that he sees no reason to leave the platform at this time. The move highlights a split in the emerging opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi and Kwankwaso leading the NDC while Ihedioha keeps the ADC as a separate third-force option.
For Nigerians watching the 2027 race, the ADC continues to position itself as a vehicle for those seeking a new political alternative outside the APC and PDP. The NDC, meanwhile, brings together two prominent figures with national followings. Will the ADC attract more politicians disillusioned with the major parties, or will the NDC become the dominant opposition bloc as the election cycle intensifies?
