The International Monetary Fund has advised Nigeria’s federal government against reinstating a broad petrol subsidy, urging instead targeted support for vulnerable households to ease rising energy costs. IMF Fiscal Affairs Director Rodrigo Valdes made the recommendation during a press briefing at the 2026 IMF‑World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, stating that blanket fuel subsidies are costly, disproportionately benefit higher‑income consumers, and exacerbate fiscal pressures amid rising borrowing costs. He noted that such subsidies have cost countries between 1 % and 1.5 % of gross domestic product in 2026 and stressed that protecting people is not the same as protecting fuel prices. Valdes urged the government to use social safety nets and household‑level data to identify those who truly need assistance. The advice comes as the federal government recently rolled out a 30‑day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) retail stations, giving priority to public‑transport operators to cushion the impact of higher fuel prices. The IMF’s stance signals that any future relief will likely be means‑tested rather than a universal price cut, which could affect transport fares, inflation, and household budgets, especially as calls for subsidy restoration grow ahead of an election year. Citizens should watch for announcements on specific safety‑net programmes, assess how potential changes in fuel pricing might affect their commuting or business costs, and consider whether they qualify for NNPC’s temporary discount or future targeted aid.
