IMF Urges Cash Transfers for Vulnerable Nigerians Amid Inflation Fight

IMF released its October 2026 World Economic Outlook at the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group in Bangkok, urging Nigeria to implement cash transfers and targeted income support for vulnerable households to reduce poverty and improve food security despite high inflation. The Fund specifically called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure inflation returns to its policy-targeted point within the typical two-to-three-year policy horizon.

This matters because while Nigeria's growth has held up as an energy exporter, living costs remain very high for ordinary households. The IMF, through its Economic Counselor Silvana Tenreyro, projects Nigeria's growth at 4.3% by 2027—outpacing advanced economies like the UK, Canada and Germany—but stresses that this growth must be accompanied by a credible medium-term fiscal framework focused on improving public expenditure quality and strengthening revenue collection.

Global growth is projected at 3% in 2026, rebounding to 3.4% in 2027 if the Strait of Hormuz conflict (which has pushed oil prices up 32% this year) fully reopens by March next year. The IMF notes that massive investment in Artificial Intelligence, including construction of data centres, is helping keep global growth afloat but warns of risks of an AI investment correction and trade fragmentation.

Will the Nigerian government heed the IMF's call for direct cash transfers to vulnerable households, and how will the CBN balance inflation control with supporting economic growth in the coming years?
