Independent Committee of Inquiry into the reported deaths of 37 persons in NSCDC custody has commenced sittings after being inaugurated by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. According to a statement issued Wednesday by Committee Secretary Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, the panel held its inaugural meeting, adopted a work plan, and will visit relevant sites, interview survivors, suspects and others with material knowledge, and gather necessary documents. The Committee’s medical team has already begun work to determine the cause, mechanism and manner of the deaths. The inquiry is significant as it addresses allegations of deaths in NSCDC custody, a pressing human rights concern that could lead to accountability and reforms. The panel appeals to the public for support and invites memoranda from individuals and organisations, with submission details to be communicated later. It reaffirms its commitment to a thorough, fair, transparent and evidence-based inquiry, and will keep the public informed as work progresses.
