Iran attacked Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, March 28, destroying a US Air Force E-3 AWACS surveillance plane valued at $700 million and injuring 12 US soldiers. The E-3 AWACS is a critical airborne radar and command hub used to track threats and direct US air operations. Fox News reports two of the injured Americans are in serious condition; the attack also involved at least one KC-135 refueling plane catching fire. Iranian ballistic missiles and drones were used in the strike.

This attack is part of the ongoing US-Iran war that began after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader approximately one month ago. The conflict has now extended beyond direct strikes between the two nations to targeting US assets in allied Gulf states like Saudi Arabia.

For Nigeria, this escalation raises concerns about global oil market volatility. As Africa's largest oil producer, Nigeria's economy is heavily dependent on stable crude prices. Any disruption in Middle East supply chains—where over 20% of global oil passes through—could immediately impact fuel prices at Nigerian pumps and government revenue. Security agencies will also monitor whether regional spillover affects West African stability or leads to increased military spending.

Nigerians should watch for: 1) Crude oil price jumps on international markets within days; 2) Potential fuel price adjustments by NNPC; 3) Government statements on strategic reserves. Will rising global oil costs directly increase your transport and goods prices within weeks?
