Iran’s judiciary announced that Ali Hemmati and Majid Nik-Andish were hanged on Wednesday over charges related to anti-government protests that began in December and peaked in January. The two were found guilty of involvement in riots that resulted in the martyrdom of four security personnel in Mashhad, and of inflicting extensive damage on public property by setting fire to shops, banks, buses, and trees. They were executed by hanging after the Supreme Court confirmed their sentences.

The protests were initially sparked by the high cost of living and grew into widespread anti-government demonstrations, peaking on January 8 and 9. Iranian authorities reported more than 3,000 deaths, attributing the violence to "terrorist acts" orchestrated by the United States and Israel, while foreign-based NGOs maintain that security forces fired on protesters. At the time, US President Donald Trump threatened military intervention before the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28, triggering the Middle East war.

Since then, arrests and executions have multiplied in Iran, linked both to the conflict and to the earlier protests. In 2025, Iran executed at least 1,639 people, the highest number for any year since 1989, according to NGOs Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty. Amnesty International says Iran is responsible for the second most executions of any country, after China.

While the events unfold far from Nigeria, they highlight the volatility in a key oil-producing region and the global stakes of government responses to dissent. Staying informed about such developments can help Nigerians understand broader patterns of repression and the importance of safeguarding peaceful expression and legal accountability.
