Iran military chief warns US, Israel over protest support

Iran's army chief General Amir Hatami warned on Wednesday that Iran will not tolerate external threats, specifically naming US and Israeli support for anti-government protests. In a statement reported by Fars news agency, Hatami said, 'The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the escalation of hostile rhetoric against the Iranian nation a threat and will not tolerate its continuation without responding.'

The warning follows recent comments by US President Donald Trump threatening to intervene if Iranian demonstrators are killed, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing support for the protesters. These tensions come after the Iranian Army released a handout picture on June 23, 2025, showing Hatami attending a meeting in the army's War Command Room.

For Nigerians following international relations, this escalation between Iran and Western powers could affect global oil prices and regional stability in the Middle East, which impacts Nigeria's external reserves and foreign policy positioning. The situation represents another flashpoint in ongoing tensions since the 2018 US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

Given these threats, do you think this will escalate into direct confrontation or remain rhetorical, and how should Nigeria position itself diplomatically given its oil export interests and relations with both the US and OPEC members?
