Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran will not resume direct negotiations with the US until Washington addresses alleged violations of an interim peace agreement, according to Iranian state TV. This comes a week after Brent crude fell over $16 per barrel in eight sessions, retreating from $100 levels as earlier US‑Iran peace hopes eased fears of supply disruption via the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies; renewed uncertainty could push prices up again. For Nigeria, oil prices affect government revenue and the cost of imported and locally distributed petroleum products. Despite recent declines, crude remains above Nigeria’s 2026 budget benchmark of $64.85 per barrel (WTI $80.23, Brent $83.86). Petrol prices have risen from about N770–N800/litre before hostilities to as high as N1,300/litre in some locations, increasing transportation costs and adding to inflationary pressures.

A fresh surge in crude prices could extend pressure on petrol prices and transport costs, especially if Hormuz disruptions persist. Consumers may need to budget for higher fuel expenses, consider fuel‑saving measures, or explore alternative transport options, while policymakers watch for potential revenue boosts versus subsidy pressures.
