Iran's Pezeshkian slams US airstrikes on schoolchildren, scientists as unjustified
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned US aerial bombardments that killed scientists, schoolchildren and commanders, saying there is no justification for the attacks. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pezeshkian accused Washington of violating international law and imposing sanctions without legitimate right. He specifically cited the February 28 missile strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab that killed 156 people, including 120 children and 26 teachers, which Amnesty International and Forensic Architecture say was hit by a US Tomahawk missile; the US has not accepted responsibility, calling it under internal investigation.
For Nigerians, the escalation matters because Iran‑US tensions can sway global oil prices, affect shipping routes, and influence Nigeria’s foreign‑policy balancing act between East and West. The humanitarian toll also resonates with many Nigerians who follow global conflicts and worry about spill‑over instability affecting trade and migration patterns.
Pezeshkian said Iran remains committed to its memorandum of understanding with the US and will comply if Washington returns to the agreement, while pledging continued Russian support for goods and commodities. Given the stakes, how should Nigeria navigate its relations with global powers while advocating for the protection of civilians in international conflicts?
