Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dies
Iranian media confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday, with Tasnim and Fars news agencies reporting his death hours after Israel and the US claimed responsibility. President Donald Trump stated Khamenei was killed by US and Israeli missiles. Iran declared 40 days of public mourning and seven days of public holidays following the strike that also killed Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Khamenei assumed office in 1989 after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's death and was the global leader of Shiite Muslims. Iran expects retaliatory strikes against Israel and US interests despite Khamenei's death. A new leader will be appointed through a constitutional process involving the president, judiciary head, and a Guardian Council cleric.
