Ireland extends its Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme to December 31, 2026, giving eligible travellers with UK short-stay visas two extra months to visit Ireland visa-free. The programme allows nationals of designated countries who entered the UK on qualifying visas (up to 180 days) to stay in Ireland for 90 days or the remainder of their UK permission—whichever is shorter. Not all UK visa holders qualify; you must be from an eligible nationality and meet entry conditions. The waiver covers tourism and family visits only—no work or settlement rights.

Separately, Ireland expanded its employment permit system in June with 32 changes, adding six occupations to the Critical Skills Employment Permit scheme—construction, healthcare, and transport roles now open to skilled Nigerians. This creates direct work pathways for qualified professionals.

However, Ireland also proposed extending the citizenship residency requirement from five to eight years in September, potentially lengthening the naturalisation timeline for long-term residents. A July concession allowed expired Irish Residence Permission holders to travel until August 31 while renewals processed (7-17 week delays).

If you hold a UK visa, check whether your nationality qualifies for the Irish waiver before booking travel. For skilled workers, the Critical Skills permit offers a structured route—review eligible occupations at enterprise.gov.ie. Would you consider Ireland as a work destination given the new skilled permits, or does the potential eight-year citizenship wait change your calculus?
