Ireland has introduced a temporary travel concession allowing eligible foreign residents to travel with expired Irish Residence Permission (IRP) cards until 31 August 2026, amid prolonged renewal processing delays of seven to 17 weeks. To qualify, applicants must have submitted their renewal application before their current permission expired, uploaded all required supporting documents, and, if required for their work, hold a valid employment permit throughout the renewal period. Travellers must carry the expired IRP card, a printed Immigration Service Delivery travel notice, proof that the renewal was submitted before expiry, and a valid employment permit where applicable; they are also advised to confirm with their airline that the carrier recognises the ISD notice alongside the expired card. The measure aims to ease travel concerns for foreign nationals—including international workers, students and families—who need to leave Ireland for work, family commitments or holidays while waiting for renewed permits. From 1 September 2026, normal immigration procedures resume, reinstating the standard 12‑week Notice to Employers policy that lets eligible workers remain under existing conditions while applications are processed, provided the application was lodged before the previous permission lapsed. For Nigerians living in Ireland, this temporary waiver offers relief from travel restrictions amid ongoing backlog, but they should prepare to resume standard procedures after the deadline.
