Isa Ashiru dumps PDP for ADC
Add us on Google A major political realignment is unfolding in Kaduna State following the resignation of former governorship candidate, Isa Ashiru, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter dated 27 March, Mr Ashiru formally notified the party’s leadership in the ward of his decision to quit the PDP, citing deep-rooted internal crises. “After a careful reflection over the persistent internal leadership crisis, conflicts, rancour, and divisions within the party, it has become increasingly difficult for me to continue to participate actively as a member of the party,” he wrote. “This decision is personal and taken in good faith. Please kindly accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation from the Party (PDP).” Confirming the development to PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, Mr Ashiru said he is pitching his political tent with the ADC, signalling a strategic shift ahead of future electoral contests. Isa Ashiru dumps PDP Political journey Mr Ashiru is a seasoned politician and former federal lawmaker who has remained a central figure in Kaduna politics over the past decade. He flew the PDP flag in the 2023 governorship election, where he was the closest contender to the eventual winner, Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Mr Ashiru contested the outcome all the way to the Supreme Court, insisting he had won the election. However, the apex court upheld Mr Sani’s victory, citing legal and procedural grounds. Cracks in PDP His exit underscores the deepening factional crisis within the PDP, where parallel structures and leadership disputes have weakened the party. Observers say the divisions have made it difficult for key stakeholders to operate effectively, leading to high-profile defections. What his move means Mr Ashiru’s anticipated defection to the ADC could significantly alter the political equation in Kaduna. The ADC, which has recently been attracting influential defectors, may gain renewed momentum and grassroots appeal with his entry.
