Israel-Iran Escalation Shatters Ceasefire After Lebanon Strikes
Israel and Iran traded retaliatory strikes Monday morning, completely shattering their ceasefire and escalating regional tensions. Iran fired first late Sunday, claiming retaliation for Israeli strikes on Lebanon's Dahieh district that killed two people and wounded 20. Israel responded with air strikes on Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan, then announced Iran fired a second wave of missiles.
This escalation follows Israel's continued attacks on Lebanon despite the ceasefire. Iran's IRGC accused the US and Israel of violating the agreement by repeatedly attacking Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and Indian Ocean. Iran-allied Houthis in Yemen also entered the conflict, firing drones at Israel and threatening to block Israeli ships from the Red Sea.
US President Trump claimed he was "very close to a deal" with Iran but also threatened to "blow the hell out of them" if talks failed. Trump said he dictated terms to Netanyahu and "calls all the shots" in the conflict, while urging Israel to "hold off for the time being." With both sides exchanging warnings of broader responses, the region faces potential for further escalation that could impact global energy markets and security.
