The Israeli Defence Force said it is investigating a soldier filmed smashing the head of a Jesus statue in southern Lebanon after the photograph went viral, garnering over five million views on X. The IDF confirmed the image’s authenticity on Sunday, stating the conduct is outrightly against its values and that the Northern Command is handling the probe through the chain of command, with appropriate measures to follow.

The incident sparked public outrage, especially among Lebanon's Christian communities, and comes amid a fragile ten‑day ceasefire brokered by the United States between Israel and Lebanon. While the IDF insists it has no plan to harm civilian infrastructure or religious symbols, its recent strikes have hit residential areas, killing around 2,167 people and injuring 7,061 in the past month, according to figures cited in the report.

The army also said it is assisting local residents to restore the statue and reiterated that its objective in southern Lebanon is to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure, not to target religious sites.

Given the ceasefire and the high civilian toll from recent strikes, what steps should both sides take to ensure respect for religious symbols and protect civilians during military operations?
