ISWAP Wali Baa Shuwa reportedly ordered the execution of senior Shura Council member Yaa Saleh after accusing him of repeatedly disregarding directives, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama. Yaa Saleh, identified as the group’s Zakkah Amir responsible for the Gudumbali, Kareto and Gubio axis areas and an indigene of Banki, was executed following internal disputes within ISWAP’s Lake Chad command structure.

The execution follows recent deaths of three other prominent ISWAP fighters in the same region and coincides with a leadership reshuffle where Yaku Abu Adam, described as the group’s most senior Buduma commander, was moved into a senior Jaish leadership position. Yaku’s former deputy Abubakar Bashihuba took over his previous responsibilities, while Yaku’s chief bodyguard Mal Haruna was appointed to a senior command position under Bashihuba—changes security sources believe aim to prevent Yaku’s potential defection or surrender.

Makama reports these developments reflect Baa Shuwa’s efforts to tighten control over ISWAP’s command structure amid ongoing internal tensions. The infighting highlights fractures within the terrorist group that could affect its operational stability in the Lake Chad Basin, impacting regional security dynamics involving Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Does this internal ISWAP crackdown signal weakening cohesion that might create opportunities for regional security forces, or will it strengthen the group’s resolve through centralized control?
