Iwobi questions officials in Nigeria's AFCON loss to Morocco
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has criticized the match officials during Nigeria's AFCON semi-final defeat to Morocco, calling the decisions "questionable." Nigeria lost 4-2 on penalties after a 120-minute goalless draw in Casablanca on Wednesday.
Iwobi, in a video posted to social media, acknowledged Morocco's victory but expressed disappointment over the officiating. "We were skeptical but some of the decisions that were not getting our way... there are some questionable things that the officials may have done," he said, while congratulating the Moroccan team.
The Fulham player described the loss as a "shame," noting the Super Eagles had been performing well in the tournament, calling it "one of our best football performances we have played for a long time." Nigeria now faces Egypt in the third-place playoff on Saturday evening.
With the loss, Nigeria's hopes of winning a fourth AFCON title were dashed. The final is now set between Morocco and Senegal, who are reportedly protesting training conditions ahead of the match. This incident adds to ongoing debates about officiating standards in African football tournaments.
