Japan raises visa fees up to 5x for foreign visitors starting July 2026
Japan announced visa fee increases effective July 1, 2026, marking the first revision since 1978. Single-entry visa jumps from ¥3,000 ($18.60) to ¥15,000 ($92.99)—a 400% increase. Multiple-entry visas rise from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000 ($187.97). These new charges apply to all applications submitted on or after July 1.
The fee hike comes as Japan's foreign resident population hits 4.13 million—the highest ever recorded at the end of 2025. Japanese officials say the increases reflect inflation over 48 years and rising administrative costs. Revenue will fund immigration management systems, Japanese language education programs, and measures against visa overstays.
More increases may follow. Residency status changes could rise from ¥5,500-¥6,000 to ¥70,000. Permanent residency applications might jump from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000 before March 2027.
If you're planning travel or relocation to Japan, budget accordingly—the cost of entry just became significantly higher.
