Veteran Nollywood actress and AMVCA Head Judge Joke Silva has defended the nomination process for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards, admitting the awards are 'subjective' but judged by professionals who understand film craft. The awards held on May 9 saw 'Gingerrr' and 'The Herd' leading with nine nominations each, followed by 'To Kill A Monkey' with eight and 'My Father's Shadow' with seven.

Silva explained that two sets of judges grade films before final selections, with scores aggregated to reduce bias. She addressed concerns about exclusions like actress Lilian Afegbai's snub from Best Supporting Actress category, noting that award-winning performances go beyond acting well to 'becoming the character' and creating believability.

Despite acknowledging some quality projects were overlooked, Silva expressed pride in Nollywood's growing volume and excellence, challenging the industry to reconsider its audience scope beyond local affordability. The judging panel emphasized technical excellence and compelling storytelling as key criteria for this year's awards.

With AMVCA celebrating African cinema's evolution, viewers are invited to consider: Does the subjective nature of film awards reflect artistic merit or commercial appeal when evaluating performances?
