Jonathan not power-hungry, aide dismisses 2027 speculation
Jude Imagwe, former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, has dismissed speculation about his principal's 2027 presidential ambitions, calling him 'neither power-hungry nor power-drunk.'
The statement comes after Taminu Turaki-led PDP faction declared Jonathan as presidential candidate for next year's general elections. Imagwe emphasized that there's no indication Jonathan has received, completed or submitted any nomination forms for the 2027 race.
'If he was power-hungry, he would not have relinquished power in 2015,' Imagwe argued during a News Central Television interview. He further claimed certain individuals with 'dangerous ambition' are dragging Jonathan's name into political speculation without his consent, noting that no one submits nomination forms without a signature.
Political observers interpret this as a clear denial that Jonathan is actively pursuing the presidency, though the PDP faction continues to push his candidacy ahead of the 2027 elections.
With the presidential race heating up, how much weight should political parties give to a candidate's expressed intentions versus their political record and support base?
