Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu has sent a message of support to Nigeria's Super Eagles ahead of their AFCON third-place playoff against Egypt on Saturday evening, January 17, 2026. Kanu posted on X: "Our dear Super Eagles, we are proud of you all, and we know what happened. Heads up for today's game. Wishing our dear Super Eagles team strength, focus, and victory today. We believe in you, and Nigerians are with you all." The match kicks off at 8pm West Africa Time in Casablanca, with bronze medals at stake.

This follows Nigeria's 4-2 penalty shoot-out defeat to Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday after a goalless draw through 120 minutes. The Super Eagles failed to score in regulation time despite creating chances, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali's heroics weren't enough as Morocco converted all four penalties. Nigeria now faces Egypt, who lost 1-0 to Senegal in the other semi-final. Both teams look to salvage pride after missing the final.

The third-place match offers a ₦50 million bonus per player if Nigeria wins, according to NFF sources. Coach Eric Chelle may rotate the squad after exhaustion from extra time. Egypt presents a tough challenge with Mohamed Salah leading their attack. For Nigerian fans, the question remains: will the Super Eagles secure bronze and end their AFCON campaign on a high, or will Egypt claim the podium finish?

Kick-off is 8pm Nigerian time with live coverage on SuperSport. The winner pockets $2.5 million in prize money while the loser gets $2 million.
