Kenya confirmed its first Ebola death on October 5, 2026, after a Kenyan man who had been living in the DRC fell ill, traveled overland to Kampala, then flew to Nairobi on October 3, and died shortly after arrival. Health Minister Aden Duale announced the death Tuesday, noting the man tested positive upon screening in Nairobi and that 28 contacts (family and healthcare workers) are being monitored, with only the deceased testing positive so far.

This marks Kenya's first-ever Ebola case, heightening regional vigilance given the man's recent travel from DRC—which declared its 17th outbreak in mid-May 2026—and Kenya's earlier public opposition to an Ebola treatment facility at Laikipia Air Base. As of October 2, WHO recorded 4,082 deaths from 8,463 cases of the Bundibugyo strain, for which no vaccine or specific treatment exists.

While Duale assured systems are in place to prevent spread and urged calm, the case underscores Ebola's ongoing threat in Central Africa and the risks posed by cross-border travel. What symptoms should you watch for if you've recently traveled from affected areas, and where would you seek help if concerned?
