Kenyan investors and capital market participants are exploring an unsponsored Global Depositary Receipt (GDR) programme on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) that would let them trade receipts representing Dangote Refinery shares in Kenyan shillings, while the underlying shares stay in Nigeria and the primary listing remains on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). The proposal emerged from an institutional investor session with Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote and was reported by Business Today Kenya on September 29, 2026.

This structure gives Kenyan institutional and retail investors a local-market route to the Dangote Refinery IPO, which is offering 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each (about ₦2.15 trillion) from September 14 to October 13, 2026. It could attract up to $300 million from Kenyan investors and, if approved, would become Africa's first unsponsored inward GDR programme, using existing NSE infrastructure for cross-border access.

Renaissance Capital is lead transaction adviser, sponsoring broker and GDR issuer; Stanbic Bank Kenya will hold the shares in custody; G&A Advocates provides legal advice; licensed Kenyan stockbrokers will handle orders and KYC checks. The programme remains subject to regulatory approval and final terms and complements, rather than duplicates, the Nigerian IPO.

Will Kenyan investors take advantage of this local route to gain exposure to the Dangote Refinery IPO, or will they still prefer direct access on the NGX, and what could increased Kenyan participation mean for the offer's pricing and Nigerian market sentiment?
