King Charles III will become the first British monarch to publicly reveal his personal tax bill, Buckingham Palace announced Saturday, as royal finances face intense public scrutiny. The disclosure comes Thursday as part of annual royal financial accounts, marking a significant shift in royal transparency protocols.

Monarchs are legally exempt from income, capital gains, and inheritance taxes, though they have voluntarily paid the first two since 1993 under Queen Elizabeth II. Charles previously disclosed his taxes as Prince of Wales before ascending the throne in 2022. This move follows damaging revelations about his brother Prince Andrew's private income from subletting properties while paying minimal rent for royal mansion use.

The Duchy of Lancaster estate provided Charles with £26.8 million ($35.6 million) annual income in 2024-25. Palace officials say the decision reflects Charles's desire to modernise the monarchy and explain royal finances within their historical and constitutional context. Government auditors recently exposed how Andrew earned private income from property deals while facing controversy over ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

This unprecedented transparency comes as the royal family seeks to rebuild public trust amid ongoing questions about royal wealth and accountability. The Sovereign Grant from UK Treasury funds official duties, but private royal income sources remain largely opaque to public scrutiny.
