The Labour Party (LP) has affirmed Abia State Governor Alex Otti as its national leader following a National Working Committee meeting on Wednesday. In a communique signed by National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha, the party also recognised former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman as national chairman, replacing Julius Abure whose tenure the Supreme Court confirmed as elapsed on April 4, 2025.

The party wished Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential candidate, well in his new political home—the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi's exit had been confirmed by Gov. Otti himself, who stated last year that Obi informed him of his decision to leave but that he would not follow.

LP called on INEC to accord Usman and Nwokocha all rights and privileges following the Supreme Court verdict. The party also announced that congresses and national convention will proceed in strict compliance with its constitution, urging members at all levels to participate actively.

The NWC reaffirmed the Labour Party remains 'united, indivisible, indissoluble' and committed to building a Nigeria founded on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance. This leadership affirmation comes as LP positions itself ahead of 2027 political realignments.
