An analysis of startup investment activity from 2019 to mid-2026 shows Launch Africa, based in Mauritius, as the most active investor with 198 deals across fintech, healthtech, agritech, climate tech and enterprise software. Germany’s DEG follows with 162 deals, then Techstars (152), Google for Startups Black Founders Fund (142) and Y Combinator (133). Nigerian venture capital firms LoftyInc Capital Management and Future Africa secured spots eight and ten in the ranking with 96 and 77 deals respectively, highlighting Nigeria’s growing role as a VC hub. Overall, 9,298 investments were made by 2,589 investors; the top 10 accounted for 13.19% of all deals. African-based investors contributed 34.59% of total deals (3,217 from 699 investors), while European development institutions accounted for 2,060 deals across 525 investors. U.S.-based investors occupy four of the top ten spots, underscoring sustained American interest in African startups.

This matters for Nigerian founders because it signals that local venture capital is maturing and actively participating in early-stage funding, increasing the chances of securing seed and Series A capital from homegrown sources. It also shows that despite a global funding slowdown after 2022, key accelerators and development finance institutions have maintained steady deal flow, providing alternative routes to growth.

If you are building a startup, consider targeting investors whose sector focus matches yours—LoftyInc and Future Africa for early-stage West Africa ventures, Launch Africa for pan-African early-stage bets, or accelerators like Y Combinator and Techstars for global network access. Check each firm’s recent deal years (e.g., LoftyInc peaked in 2021‑2022, Launch Africa stayed active with 21 deals in H1‑2026) and application deadlines to time your outreach effectively.
