Lineker, Shearer warn Fabregas: Man United job is a 'graveyard' for managers
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have bluntly warned Cesc Fabregas against taking the Manchester United head coach role, calling Old Trafford "a graveyard" where managerial careers go to die. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast after Como's 4-1 Champions League win over United on Wednesday, both legends said the Spanish coach would be "mad" to leave his thriving Serie A project for United's current chaos.
United sit 13th in the Premier League with one win in seven matches and two victories in 11 across all competitions. They haven't won in six games. Ruud van Nistelrooy is interim boss for Sunday's home fixture against Bournemouth while the club courts Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, and Fabian Hürzeler.
Fabregas, who guided Como from Serie B to Serie A and into the Champions League, has earned praise for his calm, balanced approach. Shearer called his work "remarkable." Lineker acknowledged a major club would eventually come calling but insisted United is the wrong move: "It could be Manchester United. Should he accept that position, he would be mad!"
Shearer added the only upside is a likely massive severance package within 12-18 months — a grim testament to United's managerial turnover since Ferguson left.
For Nigerian EPL followers, this signals United's crisis deepens. The legends' verdict: Fabregas should build his reputation at Como, not inherit a broken system at Old Trafford.
