LUTH doctors' strike hits day 8, demands quarters, meals at Lagos hospital

The Association of Resident Doctors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) continues its industrial action, now in its eighth day as of Monday. The strike, following a directive from the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), stems from unresolved welfare issues with LUTH management. ARD’s two non‑negotiable demands are the immediate completion of the Resident Doctors’ Quarters—an unfinished renovation project that has left doctors without accommodation for over 18 months—and the restoration of call duty meals. Resident doctors say they regularly work shifts exceeding 24 hours, often overnight, and because they cannot leave their posts to obtain food, they have been forced to sleep in their cars, hospital lounges, and other unsuitable locations while still providing essential care. The association stresses that call duty meals are a standard welfare provision in other federal tertiary health institutions and are critical for safe, uninterrupted patient care. ARD has appealed to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, urging the Federal Government to release funds so the Chief Medical Director can finish the quarters’ renovations. Without immediate intervention, ARD warns that disruption of healthcare services at LUTH will persist, affecting patients who rely on the hospital for treatment. Given the impact on both doctors’ welfare and patient access, residents of Lagos may want to consider what alternative healthcare options are available if LUTH services remain limited, and whether they support the doctors’ demands for proper accommodation and meals as essential to maintaining quality care.
