Former Senegal President Macky Sall announced on Saturday that he is pulling out of the seven‑person contest to become the next UN Secretary General, a day after an informal UN Security Council poll failed to produce a clear frontrunner. In a social‑media statement, Sall said he had noted the poll results and “hoped to contribute now the emergence of a consensus candidate within the Security Council.” He added that “the results of different test votes indicate a choice favouring a candidate — perhaps female — from the Latin America‑Caribbean region.”

A UN diplomat revealed that all seven hopefuls had received a “discourage” vote—effectively a veto—from a permanent Security Council member in the anonymous polling. Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan, who has been among the frontrunners in five previous polls, garnered the most “encourage” votes but also five “discourage” votes, including two from permanent members. US media reports suggest Washington opposes all seven contenders.

Other names floated as possible entrants include Nickolay Mladenov (high representative for Gaza under the US‑backed “Board of Peace”), UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Lana Nusseibeh, Turkey’s Feridun Hadi Sinirlioglu (OSCE Secretary General), Guyanese ex‑foreign minister Carolyn Rodrigues‑Birkett, Argentina’s Rafael Grossi (who heads the UN nuclear watchdog), Ecuador’s Ivonne A‑Baki and Maria Fernanda Espinosa, and Uganda’s Olara Otunnu. The incumbent Secretary‑General, Antonio Guterres of Portugal, ends his second five‑year term on December 31.

For Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, this development shrinks the pool of African candidates vying for the UN’s top post and shifts attention toward a potential Latin America‑Caribbean nominee. Nigeria may need to decide whether to rally behind another African contender, engage in behind‑the‑scenes diplomacy to influence the final selection, or adjust its UN voting strategy accordingly.

What role should Nigeria play in shaping the next UN Secretary‑General—support an African alternative, accommodate a Latin America‑Caribbean choice, or use its vote to press for a consensus that reflects continental interests?
