Mafab seeks to sell key 5G spectrum to MTN in NCC-driven reshuffle

Mafab Communications is seeking to transfer its 2×20 MHz holding in the 2.1 GHz band and 100 MHz block in the 3.5 GHz band to MTN Nigeria, according to TechCabal. If approved by NCC, this would end Mafab's run as one of Nigeria's two initial 5G operators. Mafab paid $273.6 million in 2021 for its 3.5 GHz spectrum in Nigeria's first 5G auction.

The transfer is part of NCC's broader effort to ensure valuable spectrum is used efficiently rather than sitting underutilized. The regulator wants "limited valuable spectrum in the hands of those who need it," moving frequencies from holders unable to fully deploy them to operators with infrastructure like MTN and Glo. Similar transfers include Megatech's 2.6 GHz spectrum to Glo for over ₦20 billion.

MTN may not retain all existing spectrum if it gains Mafab's assets, as NCC could require reshuffling to prevent excessive concentration. 5G adoption in Nigeria reached 4.61% of mobile connections (4.5-5 million) as of June 2026. The transaction remains under regulatory review with no immediate response from Mafab, MTN, or NCC.
