Malawi coach Chombo confident of overturning 2-0 loss to Nigeria's Falconets
Malawi lost 2-0 to Nigeria's Falconets in the first leg of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup qualifier, played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The Falconets took the lead in the 46th minute when Maureen Kenneth scored an own goal, and Kindness Ifeanyi extended the advantage with a substitute goal in the 57th minute.
Despite the defeat, Malawi coach Maggie Chombo remains optimistic that her side can overturn the deficit in the second leg, scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at Bingu National Stadium in Malawi. She points to the team’s home advantage and belief that they can replicate Nigeria’s performance on their own turf, keeping Malawi’s World Cup hopes alive.
With a two-goal gap to overcome, Malawi will need to score at least three goals without conceding to advance on aggregate. Will the Young Scorchers pull off a historic comeback at home, or will the Falconets secure their place at the World Cup by defending their lead?
