Malaysia to sue X, xAI over Grok-generated sexual content
Malaysian regulators announced Tuesday they will take legal action against Elon Musk's X and xAI over safety concerns with their AI chatbot Grok. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) says Grok enabled users to create and share sexualised images of women and children using simple text prompts. MCMC suspended Grok access on Sunday and appointed solicitors for legal proceedings, though specific details weren't disclosed.
The regulator identified misuse of Grok to generate obscene, sexually explicit content and non-consensual manipulated images involving women and minors—violating Malaysian law. MCMC issued removal notices on January 3 and January 8, but says the companies took no action. The commission accused X and xAI of failing to enforce their own harmful content policies and noted they may still be liable even for user-generated content.
Neighbouring Indonesia blocked Grok entirely on Saturday. Other markets have limited the image creation feature to paid subscribers, but European officials say this doesn't address deepfake concerns. Malaysia's action signals regional pressure on AI platforms over user safety standards.
