Manchester United has sacked manager Ruben Amorim just 14 months after his appointment, following a reported row with sporting director Jason Wilcox last Friday. The club confirmed the decision on Monday, stating it was made "reluctantly" but necessary to give the team "the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish." Amorim's tenure was the shortest for a permanent manager since David Moyes in 2014.

Former players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have held informal discussions with Wilcox about potentially taking over as interim head coach. Darren Fletcher, currently managing the Under-18 side, has been named interim head coach for the immediate match against Burnley. Solskjaer previously managed United from December 2018 to November 2021, while Carrick served as temporary manager after his departure.

United sits sixth in the Premier League with eight wins from 20 matches this season. Amorim's dismissal came after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds, where he publicly clashed with the scouting department and Wilcox. The 40-year-old had led United to the Europa League final in May 2025 but finished 15th in the league last season. The club hasn't won the Premier League since 2013 under Alex Ferguson.
