Microsoft invests $10B in Japan AI data centres over four years
Microsoft announced a $10 billion investment in Japan to build AI data centres and infrastructure, responding to growing demand for cloud and AI services in the world's fourth-largest economy. The investment, spanning four years, includes collaboration with SoftBank Group and Sakura Internet to expand domestic tech infrastructure, cybersecurity partnerships with Japanese government agencies, and training one million engineers with NTT and NEC. Japan faces constraints like limited space and expensive electricity, making data centre expansion challenging. Microsoft previously committed $2.9 billion over two years in 2024 to boost Japan's AI push and cyber defences. The company also pledges carbon negative and water positive operations by 2030, amid rising environmental concerns about data centre energy and water use in Asia-Pacific. While this targets Japan's market, Microsoft's aggressive global AI infrastructure spending—including over $1 billion in Thailand—signals a strategic push in Asia. For Nigeria's tech ecosystem, this raises questions about competing in the global AI race: Should policy focus on attracting foreign data centre investments, developing local renewable energy for tech infrastructure, or building domestic AI talent to avoid digital dependency?
