Middle East tensions flare as Iran-US conflict continues despite World Cup visas

New attacks in Middle East on Friday threatened to unravel a fragile US-Iran ceasefire that has been in place since April 8. US military confirmed striking radar sites in Iran after downing drones headed toward the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran's Revolutionary Guards responded with missiles targeting 'enemy bases.' Iran launched seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain—six were downed, one missed its target.

Despite escalating tensions, US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack confirmed that Iran's football players received visas for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating 'sports transcends borders.' Iran's Fars news agency however reported visas were still pending for some technical staff. A US administration official stated they won't allow Iran to 'sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretenses.'

The Iranian team is scheduled to fly from Turkey to Spain Saturday before traveling to their Mexico base camp Sunday. This geopolitical tension comes as efforts to secure a lasting peace settlement have stalled, rattling global energy markets and increasing political pressure on President Trump. With Iran controlling key global energy routes through the Strait of Hormuz, any escalation could affect global oil supplies and prices worldwide.
