Nigerian Defence Headquarters clarifies controversy over Abubakar Mainok's reported killings in 2024 and 2026, saying similar names and aliases are common among ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters. The DHQ emphasized this practice forms part of insurgents' indoctrination process aimed at deliberately obscuring identities and complicating counterterrorism operations.

While the presidency suggested the 2024 report may have involved mistaken identity, Defence Headquarters spokesperson Samaila Uba explained the Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki eliminated on May 16, 2026, was 'positively identified through human intelligence and technical surveillance as a senior global operative within the Islamic State network.'

Mainok, designated as a global terrorist in 2023, was a key figure in ISWAP and head of Al-Furqan, which oversees operations by the Islamic State's affiliates in West Africa. The joint Nigerian-US operation is described as a significant milestone in counterterrorism efforts.

Many Nigerians remain skeptical given previous instances where terror leaders like Abubakar Shekau were declared dead multiple times between 2009 and 2021. Should we trust official counterterrorism announcements in light of these intelligence challenges, or do we need independent verification for high-profile claims?
