Military vows to protect democracy, confront threats nationwide
Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has declared that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in fighting terrorism and criminality threatening the nation's peace and flourishing democracy. Speaking at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner on Wednesday, Oluyede said the military alone cannot preserve the national heritage.
'The way forward lies in a whole-of-society approach,' he stated, emphasizing the need to build strong relationships with local communities and foster collaboration with sister security agencies. He noted that troops have continued to prevail and win the hearts of compatriots, bridging the trust gap between the military and civilian populace.
Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) described the occasion as representing the heartbeat of Nigeria's military heritage, celebrating the professionalism and courage of serving officers while solemnly remembering fallen heroes. He stressed that the peace and security enjoyed nationwide are products of military vigilance, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication.
The event, marking Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, served to honour those who have laid down their lives for Nigeria's sovereignty. Oluyede called for renewed sense of purpose among troops to continue serving with honour and professionalism.
With Nigeria's democracy facing various security challenges across different regions, this military commitment to protect democratic institutions comes as the government seeks to strengthen national security architecture. The whole-of-society approach suggests increased community engagement and inter-agency cooperation in addressing insecurity.
