Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has clarified that Nigeria's new migration agreement with the UK does not involve accepting foreign prisoners or asylum seekers. Speaking on Channels Television, he said the deal, signed during President Tinubu's UK visit, strictly concerns the return of Nigerians who are out of status in the UK. He cited Article 7 of the agreement, which focuses on the 'dignified return' of a country's own nationals, and dismissed rumours about dumping criminals as 'never going to be done' by this administration.

The minister emphasized the agreement is based on diplomatic reciprocity, calling it a '50-50' arrangement that opens collaboration opportunities. He stressed Nigeria is 'not interested in exporting problems' but in solving irregular migration jointly. Article 8 guarantees returnees will be treated with respect and dignity, with human rights protected. He also clarified the agreement differs from the UK's Rwanda asylum plan as it excludes family members and handles cases under specific legal conditions.

Tunji-Ojo maintained the government is transparent, noting a presidential press release detailed all sections. The broader MoUs aim to enhance trade and business mobility alongside migration management. Nigerians concerned about accepting foreign criminals can be assured the scope is limited to Nigerian nationals overstaying or without status in the UK.
