MPAC warns foreign powers against interfering in Iran protests
The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has condemned foreign interference in Iran, warning that external involvement could escalate tensions and undermine Iranian sovereignty. In a statement issued Thursday, the group expressed solidarity with Iranians protesting economic hardship, which it largely attributes to United States sanctions and Israeli covert actions it says have destabilised the country.
MPAC accused the U.S. and Israel of seeking to exploit the unrest for geopolitical advantage, citing claims that foreign agents have infiltrated protests to provoke violence. The group criticised statements by the U.S. President encouraging protests, arguing such remarks endanger innocent lives, especially given how the U.S. handles its own domestic unrest with force.
Drawing parallels with Iraq and Libya, MPAC urged Iranians to resist foreign sabotage while calling on the government to engage in constructive dialogue with opposition groups. The organisation described military escalation as "a recipe for disaster" and stressed that a peaceful, internally driven process is the only viable path for Iran.
For Nigerians, this highlights how foreign policy decisions—like sanctions—can trigger regional instability affecting oil prices and security. As a regional power, what role should Nigeria play in encouraging diplomatic solutions over military intervention in the Middle East?
