NAICOM insurance recapitalization deadline July 31: Over 70% verified, capital rules tighten
More than 70% of Nigerian insurance companies have completed the independent verification of their capital positions under NAICOM's recapitalisation programme, with the July 31, 2026 deadline just four days away. NIA Chairman Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu confirmed the exercise is in its final stage, noting most insurers have already lodged the required 10% statutory deposits with the CBN based on new minimum capital requirements. Non-life insurers must now hold ₦15 billion (up from ₦3 billion), life insurers ₦10 billion (up from ₦2 billion), and reinsurers ₦35 billion (up from ₦10 billion). Verification is being conducted by the Big Four auditors—KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, and EY—with NAICOM set to announce results after the deadline. The regulator has pledged to prevent any licensed insurer's collapse while engaging firms with capital shortfalls. Linkage Assurance Plc already met requirements via a ₦16.2 billion Rights Issue. Industry expects the programme to trigger mergers and acquisitions among firms unable to meet new thresholds independently, ultimately strengthening the sector's capacity to underwrite larger risks and pay claims.
With the deadline imminent, insurance sector stakeholders should verify their company's compliance status now. For policyholders, the recapitalisation aims to improve claims-paying ability and sector stability. Investors should note that non-compliant firms may pursue mergers or fresh capital raises—similar to Linkage Assurance's approach—to avoid regulatory action before July 31.
