Naira weakens despite dollar meltdown—pressure to hit ₦1,500/$ by mid-2026

The Nigerian Naira is declining even as the US dollar weakens globally, with the official rate closing at N1,421.9/$ last week. Despite a 0.4% drop in the US Dollar Index to 97, the Naira failed to strengthen, trading between N1,409 and N1,421 per dollar at the official window.

This unusual pattern stems from Nigeria-specific issues: thin foreign exchange liquidity, supply constraints at official windows, low dollar inflows, heavy reliance on oil revenues, and FX access restrictions. The parallel market shows less volatility than the official market, but pressure remains intense.

Analyst forecasts show a split. Bearish views from Citi predict the Naira could hit ₦1,650-₦1,700/$ by mid-2026 due to oil price risks and potential CBN policy easing. Optimistic scenarios see the currency strengthening to N1,350-N1,313/$ by mid-2026, driven by ongoing reforms, non-oil exports, and World Bank upgraded growth forecasts of 4.4% for 2026. The consensus average tilts toward N1,400-N1,500/$ for the rest of the year.

Geopolitical tensions, oil prices, and domestic policies remain key volatility drivers. While a weaker dollar typically supports the Naira and boosts oil prices, Nigeria's compounded risks (FX supply, high inflation, oil dependence) limit these benefits. Continued CBN interventions and global Fed actions will heavily influence Naira stability.

With fiscal reforms needed to strengthen domestic cash inflows, will you adjust your currency holdings or business forex planning for sustained volatility, or wait for mid-2026 recovery scenarios?
