NARD threatens nationwide strike from Aug 10 over unpaid salaries and welfare
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has warned of an indefinite nationwide strike starting at 8 a.m. on 10 August if the federal government does not settle outstanding salary arrears, welfare concerns and other longstanding issues. The association’s National Executive Council, meeting in Gombe State, cited unpaid arrears from the 25% and 35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, 19 months of unpaid professional allowance, salary and promotion arrears, and omissions from the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund disbursement as key demands. NARD also highlighted ongoing intimidation of resident doctors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), persistent assaults on healthcare workers nationwide, deteriorating hospital infrastructure, unreliable power supply and chronic underfunding of the health sector.
If the strike proceeds, millions of Nigerians who depend on public hospitals could face disrupted access to consultations, surgeries and essential services, adding pressure to an already strained system.
