NASA has published the first images of Earth captured by astronauts aboard the Artemis II mission as they journeyed toward the moon. Mission commander Reid Wiseman took the photos using a tablet with a camera from inside the Orion capsule. One image shows a sunlit Earth with auroras visible in the top right and bottom left corners and a bright band of zodiacal light in the bottom right. Another, taken minutes later with a faster shutter speed, highlights Earth's night glow with scattered city lights and a sunlit edge. NASA described these as a "pale blue dot seen through the crew's eyes."

Mission specialist Christina Koch, during a media downlink, expressed excitement about the views: "Seeing the entire planet out the window... is definitely getting me more excited for the moon." Wiseman noted the entire globe was visible, from pole to pole, with Africa and Europe identifiable, calling it an "incredibly spectacular moment." The crew delayed their first meal to gaze out the windows and take pictures, and Wisdom asked about cleaning Orion's dirtied windows from their constant viewing. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen added: "None of us can seem to get to lunch because we are captivated by the window."

These images offer a powerful visual reminder of Earth's fragility and unity from the unique vantage point of deep space travel. While the mission's direct impact on daily Nigerian life is minimal, the perspective resonates universally.
