NASU and SSANU have declared an indefinite strike starting at midnight on May 1, 2026, after negotiations with the Federal Government stalled over allowances. The unions cited the government's failure to present a new offer following the withdrawal of a circular on a 30 percent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance, which did not address their core demands. In a letter dated April 30 addressed to Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, NASU general secretary Mohammed Ibrahim and SSANU president stated that with no agreement by April 30 and no new offer, the strike would commence at 12:00 am May 1. They accused the government of failing to avert the crisis through meaningful engagement, noting members had earlier urged leadership to act if talks were not finished by the deadline. The strike affects all non-academic staff across Nigerian universities, potentially disrupting academic activities, administrative services, and campus operations nationwide. Students and faculty should prepare for possible closures or reduced services and monitor official communications from their institutions for updates. Will you adjust your study or work plans in anticipation of the strike, or seek alternative arrangements to mitigate its impact?
