National Policing Bill 90% Ready for NASS Transmission, Says Presidency
The Presidential Working Group announced the National Policing Bill is 90% ready for transmission to the National Assembly, with final transmission expected within two weeks. Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila stated after Thursday's Abuja meeting that governors have minor observations to address, and the bill—called 'the most consequential of this administration'—will likely go to NASS in about a week.
This development matters as it advances police reform discussions amid slow state-level action on the State Police Bill; only six states and the FCT have passed the Sixth Constitution Alteration Bill for state police out of 36 states. The Working Group includes Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun, IGP Tunji Disu, and other officials who've been refining the bill since August 3 deliberations began.
With police reform directly affecting community safety and law enforcement interactions nationwide, will you monitor how this federal bill complements or differs from state-level policing initiatives already passed in some regions, and what specific changes you hope to see in the final legislation?
