Navy Chief Calls for Special Court to Prosecute Maritime Crimes

CNS Vice Admiral Idi Abbas has called for the creation of a special court dedicated to prosecuting maritime crimes, particularly crude oil theft and other offshore offences, arguing that it would accelerate justice and relieve the Navy of the cost of maintaining seized vessels while awaiting trial. He made the appeal on Friday during an interview on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily, noting that such a court would focus exclusively on these cases and reduce delays in the conventional judicial process.

The naval chief explained that the Navy currently bears substantial operational expenses securing and maintaining vessels arrested for maritime offences, a burden that hampers its ability to patrol effectively. He highlighted recent improvements in maritime security—fleet recapitalisation, deployment of modern surveillance technology, and Nigeria’s removal from the global piracy‑prone list in 2023—as evidence of progress, while acknowledging that occasional sea robbery persists and that regional cooperation remains essential to keep gains sustainable.

If established, the special court would try only maritime crimes, potentially shortening case resolution times and cutting costs for the state. For coastal communities, businesses involved in shipping or fishing, and anyone affected by oil theft, faster justice could mean safer waters and reduced economic losses. Readers may want to follow legislative developments on the proposal and consider how a dedicated maritime court might influence local safety and livelihoods—would it deter theft more effectively than reforming existing courts, or should resources be directed elsewhere?
