NCAA Heightens Airport Ebola Surveillance After DRC Outbreak
NCAA directed airlines, airports and aviation stakeholders to intensify health surveillance May 18 following Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda. The directive comes after Bundibugyo virus (Ebola family) detected among healthcare workers in Bunia Health Zone—no confirmed cases in Nigeria yet.
NCAA working with Federal Ministry of Health, NCDC, Port Health Services and international organizations to monitor situation. Symptoms include sudden fever, severe fatigue, headache, vomiting, abdominal pain and bleeding. No licensed vaccine exists for this strain—treatment remains supportive.
Pilots must notify Air Traffic Control of suspected cases; flight crews must complete Aircraft General Declaration forms. Airlines must ensure passenger locator forms submitted to Port Health Services and aircraft equipped with medical kits. Contact tracing and border screening reinforced nationwide.
Early detection critical to preventing international spread. Will your travel plans be affected by these enhanced screening measures at Nigerian airports?
