NCC confirms existing phones unaffected by new compliance policy - no action needed for current users
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) assured telecommunications subscribers that mobile phones and SIM-enabled devices already in use before its Type Approval Compliance implementation will not be affected. Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Engr. Edoyemi Ogoh, stated during an Abuja press briefing that approximately 233 million subscribers and 131 million devices were registered before the system became fully operational, so existing users need take no action.
Ogoh explained the compliance requirements target devices being purchased and introduced into the Nigerian market, not phones already in use. He emphasized that subscribers who bought devices prior to implementation and have been using them do not need to do anything. The initiative aims to ensure imported, sold and used communications equipment meets technical and regulatory standards while strengthening consumer protection and network integrity.
For businesses, Ogoh urged those facing compliance difficulties to contact the NCC via short code 315 for assistance, noting an online process exists for registering operations and uploading device stock information. Prospective buyers should check a device's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number before purchase—often printed on packaging—to verify compliance. The NCC dismissed concerns about wrongful blocking of genuine devices, affirming its system can identify legitimate equipment and promising assistance via short code 315 if issues arise.
